Martin's Station

Martin's Station

There is a historical marker for Martin's Station on U.S. 27 (the Paris-Cynthiana Road). The station, or fort, was built in 1779 by Capt. James Martin and enjoyed only a brief existence. It was attacked by a force numbering between 600 to 1,000 that included British regular soldiers, Canadian volunteers and Indians under the command of Col. Henry Byrd, on June 28, 1780. The attacking force was supported by cannon, which brought a quick end to the resistance of those inside the fort. They surrendered to the British and were taken, along with other captives, to Detroit. The fort was destroyed and the Indians seized the horses and livestock. Martin's Station has been recognized as one of the most significant Revolutionary War sites in the state.
