Jacob Spears' Home

Stone Castle, the home of Jacob Spears, was built circa 1790 and enlarged c. 1850. Located on the Clay-Kiser Road just one mile from the Cynthiana-Paris Road, this house is important architecturally and historically. Probably built by one of the Metcalfes, the stone work is fine and still plumb. Jacob Spears became an innovative farmer and industrialist. He syndicated the first stallion brought from Virginia; he was the first advertised buyer of bluegrass seed in 1818, and he dealt in mules. He was one of the earliest distillers (1790), selling his whiskey in New Orleans 1808-1822 with his label BOURBON, named for the county where he lived.
